Reed is a hollow, waxy organic material. Applied in layers, called courses, a cubic foot thick.
Each bundle of reed is laid in a course on the roof. When the courses have been applied to the roof up to the ridge area it is then time for the ridgework.
Dressed reed courses.
As each course is applied to the roof up to the ridge area it is 'dressed' with a leggett.
Each course of reed applied to roof is affixed with steel rod and screw.
Sheepshears are used to dress and trim.They may be used to cut an ornamental pattern for reed ridge.
